After meeting Natalie (from Free the Nipple Zine Swansea) when she visited our GIRLS exhibition, we (fellow course mate Tiffany Dyke and I) met up on International women's day and we found out she works at Gower College teaching foundation level art students. She offered us an amazing opportunity which was for us to go and do a talk about our time at university and our experiences running the feminist society and doing our own exhibition. As well as the talk, she offered for us to run a zine-making workshop with the students who were interested in feminism and using it as a theme in their work.
We ran the workshop and talk soon after, earlier today. It was scary at first to stand up and give a presentation and talk in front of the girls, but they were all really interested in what we had to say and asked plenty of questions which was encouraging. Also, Natalie asked us to give tutorials to the girls and help them with their work by suggesting ideas and artists. This really boosted my confidence as they were very keen to gain feedback from us and it was really interesting to see what they were all working on.
The workshop in the afternoon was quite relaxed and chatty and we used the screen-printed resources and patterns that we had created in advance for it. We also gave out some University merchandise and talked about what the students had planned after they finished their foundations.
I really enjoyed the experience and I will be seeking out more similar opportunities.
Here are some photos from the day:
